ONCE IN A LIFETIME

I was a teenage DJ and party promoter in Manchester, England. My first 'advertising gig' was sticking rave posters on bus stops. At some point, I graduated to designing posters and then record covers.

My first job-job was with menswear web shop pioneers Oi Polloi. We were early to the whole 'web store with editorial' thing; a personality-led brand with a sense of humour, a deep appreciation for specific items of clothing, and a self-awareness re: the absurdity of #menswear. (In an interview, Carson Mell proposed that you should only make fun of things you love. I agree.) The Face wrote an obituary-not-obituary.

Our work at Oi Polloi travelled (the internet) to NYC; Doubleday & Cartwright took note and kindly shipped me out to work on Nike. I spent 10 years at great design studios and ad agencies with great people. I learned a lot. Some co-workers told me this learning was reciprocal, which is a great compliment.

Since going freelance, I've worked mostly as an art director or creative director for agencies. I also direct commercials and music videos (email me for the password; there’s some top-secret stuff on there).

Music videos are a labour of love that reconnects me with my early days. A loop has been completed. Building D.I.Y. lighting rigs from items found in hardware stores will help you better appreciate your Grip & Electric dept. next time you're on set. Self-sufficiency is important and collaboration is everything.

I still play music for fun.
